The Nursing Home Innovation Award

This exciting award is open to all NHI registered nursing homes. The award is established to celebrate innovative developments in nursing homes and to recognise the role that nursing homes play in creating new cultures of residential care. Many nursing homes are leading the way in developing new models of practice, challenging existing practices and eroding dominant stereotypes in nursing home care. There are no limitations on what can be counted as ‘innovative’ in this award – so for example, an innovation could be focused on particular approaches to care delivery (e.g. innovative dementia care; innovative re-enablement models etc), new approaches to staff development (e.g. work-based learning activity, digital learning support etc), innovative design ideas (e.g. use of technology, building design etc) or innovative collaborations (e.g. partnership models of working, international development etc) to name but a few.

Candidates for this award should be selected on the basis that they have achieved significant success in introducing a new innovation. The innovation can be of any kind as long as it demonstrates the ‘breaking away’ from established and accepted ways of working, thinking, practicing or delivering services.

How to Apply

Fill out the application form and complete a 500 word summary outlining a significant achievement the nursing home has made in developing and implementing an innovation. An innovation could include, establishing a new service model, spearheading new design features of the built environment; implementing evidence from research that challenges existing practices/services or a totally new approach to how the nursing home operates day to day.

To be eligible for this award, the candidate needs to:
1. Be a 2012 Nursing Homes Ireland Registered Nursing Home
2. Be nominated by a family member, friend, member of the local community, member of the nursing home team, Person in Charge or Registered Provider. The person nominated must be the person accountable for the innovation employed in an NHI nursing home.
3. The person nominated must be able to attend an interview and at the beginning of the interview deliver a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation detailing the innovation (processes and outcomes).
