About NHI


Nursing Homes Ireland is the representative organisation for the private and voluntary nursing homes sector. This sector, and the care our members provide, are key parts of the Irish health service.

Since the establishment of Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) in January 2008 NHI’s considerable activities have resulted in recognition of NHI as the key representative organisation for the vast collective that encompasses the private and voluntary nursing homes sector. NHI is also firmly established as spokesperson and agency for consultation on many sector related issues by various Government bodies, other stakeholders in the sector, the media and an active advocate for older people.

Indisputably, the nursing home sector and the invaluable care our members provide, is an integral part of the Irish health service. The immense contribution and the important services provided by the private and voluntary sector in the community at large, are plainly obvious in the following statistics our sector; Our vision, that all residents of nursing homes will receive high quality care, is one that will be realised through meaningful partnership with the Government, the HSE and the National Treatment Purchase Fund as purchasers, HIQA as the regulator, our members and all the stakeholders in delivering that high quality care to those who need it.

Long-term care is assuming a higher profile in health policy debates, partly because it will require a growing share of national expenditures on health in the future. As populations age, growing demand for long-term care is expected. Ireland’s population is ageing; the pace of the ageing is rapidly accelerating and planning for commensurate increases in services for older people are required now.

Looking ahead it is evident that meeting the needs of and supporting this rapidly growing population will be critical and there are many stakeholders who play a part in this process. The stakeholders whose work often goes unrecognised are the private and voluntary sector’s attentive army of 21,000 staff providing professional care for our older people.

Valuing and acknowledging the highly skilled and dedicated individuals who work closest to our older persons in rewarding albeit demanding, challenging and specialised work is very important. They deserve the opportunity to shine, to have their invaluable work recognised and celebrated.

Nursing Homes Ireland is committed to providing leadership, supporting members and promoting excellence, and are proud to be a conduit for positive benchmarking in care for our older persons by hosting the Annual Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) Care Awards in association with Homecare Medical Supplies on 10th November 2011
